The 2012 Johnny Roberts Memorial Disc Golf Tournament will be held this coming weekend, October 13-14, 2012, in Denver and Arvada, Colorado. This PDGA sanctioned B-tier event is held annually to honor Johnny Roberts, a well loved community leader, high school teacher, national disc sports legend and mentor who passed away in 1994 at the age of 63.
The annual event is very important to the Arvada and Colorado Disc Golf Community, and Mile High Disc Golf Club (MHDG) welcomes players locally and nationally to join in this special event to honor a man that was known not only throughout our community but by others throughout the world.
The Open/Pro Pool will play two rounds of 18 holes at the Colorado Heights University Disc Golf Course in Denver on Saturday and one round at the Johnny Roberts Memorial Disc Golf Course in Arvada on Sunday. Sunday’s round will be followed by a final 9 for the Open divisions at CHU.
There are 154 disc golfers registered to compete in this popular event, including Joe Rovere of Arvada, Colorado who was crowned champion at the Colorado Disc Golf Championships last month in Fort Morgan, Colorado. He’s also had victories at the Denver Classic and Colorado Open in addition to a number of others.
Other familiar names who will be in the competition this year include Jared Roan of Greenwood Village, Colorado and Mitch Sonderfan of Erie, Colorado.
In the Women’s Open division, Kathy Hardyman of Colorado Springs who won her division at the Colorado Disc Golf Championships will also be here, along with another popular female player, Paige Bjerkaas of Denver who was the winner of the Colorado Open.
Sunday’s weather in the Denver area is expected to be ideal with sun and temperatures in the upper 60s, making this a great time for spectators to come out and watch the final round and learn a little more about the great sport of disc golf!
