Disc Golf this Weekend: 2012 Jelly Jam at Ryan Ranch in Monterey, California

The 2012 Jelly Jam at Ryan Ranch is almost here. Starting Friday, May 25 through Sunday, May 27, this PDGA sanctioned A-tier event will take place at the Ryan Ranch Disc Golf Course on the spectacular central coast of California. For those who’ve yet to experience this region, the Monterey Bay Area is one of the most picturesque places in the nation with many opportunities for a wide variety of fun outdoor activities from beach combing and surfing to hiking, biking, sailing and much more.

The Stinging Jellies Disc Golf Club , a non-profit organization established back in 2004 dedicated to supporting disc golf throughout the Monterey region, hosts this exciting tournament every year. This is the first year this event will be an A-tier tournament as well as a Vibram Open qualifier, thanks in part to their efforts and to disc golfers who have worked hard to support them.

Three rounds of 27-holes each will be played each day with a shotgun start of 10 a.m. sharp and check-in on Friday at 8:30 a.m. The Ryan Ranch Course is a scenic course played through rolling hills with lots of elevation change. There is a mix of both short and long shots as well as both wooded and open holes.

This would be a great event for disc golfers to check out if you’d like to learn a little from the pros. Some of the big names who will be here this weekend include 2011 Pro Masters Disc Golf World Champion, Jon Baldwin from Scotts Valley, California. Baldwin had a second place finish at February’s CSUMB Otter Open.

Defending champion, Gregg Barsby of Grass Valley, California will be competing this year too. Barsby was the winner of the Auburn Open held in April and had several other victories in 2011, including the  Silicon Valley Classic and the 2011 Feather River Open.

If you’re on the Monterey Peninsula this weekend, take a trip to Ryan Ranch and find out what the great sport of disc golf is all about.
