Disc Golf this Weekend: Beaver State Fling Brings Top Pros Out to Estacada, Oregon

This weekend, the world’s best disc golf pros head to Estacada, Oregon to compete in the Beaver State Fling, a National Tour Elite Series event.  This PDGA sanctioned A-tier tournament will be played at the beautiful Riverbend Disc Golf Course in Milo McIver State Park. Riverbend is one of the most fantastic and challenging courses in the nation and plays over rolling terrain among a lush background of trees and ferns on the banks of the Clackamas River.

For those in the Pacific Northwest, this would be a great time to come check out what this sport is all about, and watch some of these exceptional players showcase their skills. Bring the entire family as the sport is fun and friendly for all ages, and getting a young person interested and involved in any physical activity is always a great idea. Milo McIver State Park also provides a wide variety of other recreational opportunities from hiking and horseback riding to exploring the river on rafts, canoes or kayaks and more.

The tournament kicks off on Friday, June 15 with round one tee-off for the pros at 9 a.m. and round two teeing off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday tee-times are still yet to be announced; check the site schedule for updates. The weather in the region is expected to be ideal, with temperatures in the upper 70s on Friday and Saturday and upper 60s on Sunday.

Some of the well-known disc golf pros who will be competing in the Beaver State Fling include three-time SoCal Series Champion Philo Brathwaite of Tujunga, California who was crowned champion at last weekend’s High Plains Challenge in Colorado. Brathwaite is also the founder and director of Team Philo, which was “created to bring awareness, enthusiasm and Disc Golf Clinics to new communities around the world.”

2009 Disc Golf World Champion Avery Jenkins of Capitola, California will compete alongside Brathwaite in the open division. He recently traveled all the way to Sula, Norway, winning  the Sula Open and he is also a big part of  Discmania’s newly released documentary series, showcasing  five different disc golf clinics presented by himself and three-time Finnish Champion Jussi Meresmaa.

12-time Disc Golf World Champion Ken Climo will also be in Oregon for this event as well as 2011 World Champion, Nate Doss, 2011 Women’s World Champion, Paige Pierce, three-time Women’s World Champion Valarie Jenkins, and the list goes on to include many more of the biggest names in the fastest growing sport on the planet.
