Another exciting disc golf event will take place this weekend in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The Fort Steilacoom Open is a PDGA sanctioned A-tier event and will be held at the Fort Steilacoom Disc Golf Park in Steilacoom, Washington just southwest of Tacoma on June 23 and 24, 2012. The park includes four disc golf courses, while the tournament will take place at the Northwest and Southeast courses. This disc golf park is one of the most beautiful in all of Washington state, and the Northwest course is the most challenging, with lots of trees to navigate.
These courses have some of the best variety you’ll find, from both long holes and short technical holes, and make good use of the natural terrain, with lots of elevation changes. On a clear day, disc golfers are treated to spectacular views of Mount Rainier, although this weekend it’s likely to be hiding behind cloud cover.
The tournament will kick off on Friday, June 22, with an early check-in from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and from 5:30 to 6, Portland’s Tim Skellenger and Ricky Wysocki of Fort Mill, South Carolina will be presenting a free disc golf clinic. Skellenger was impressive at last weekend’s Beaver State Fling, battling it out to a dramatic finish with Cale Leiviska and ultimately capturing second place just a stroke behind him. He’ll be working with beginners on basic throwing techniques. Wysocki is the 2011 PDGA Rookie of the Year and will be helping the more advanced players on different throwing styles as well as adding more power to both backhand and forehand shots.
Saturday’s first round will tee-off at 10 a.m., while Sunday’s round three begins at 9:30 a.m. Many top disc golf pros will be in the competition this weekend, including Washington state’s best, Kyle Crabtree of Fife, Washington. Crabtree recently won the Battle at Seattle 2.0 and also had victories at the Windy River Open, the St. Patty’s Day Massacre and the Chainbanger Club Member Drive.
Some of the other well-known players who will be here include Jeremy Koling of Charlotte, North Carolina, and one of the top women disc golfers in the world, Sarah Hokom from Caldwell, Idaho.
If you’d like to know more about what this great sport is all about, this weekend would be a good time to come out and watch some of these exceptional players showcase their skills at beautiful Fort Steilacoom!
