Disc Golf this Weekend: Kansas City Wide Open

One of the biggest disc golf events of the year, the Kansas City Wide Open begins Friday, June 1st and will take place through Sunday, June 3rd at the Rosedale, Water Works and the modified but challenging Blue Valley track as well as a new addition to the tournament, the Wilbur Young layout in Blue Springs.

This is the 30th year for this prestigious event and the best of the best in disc golf will be in Kansas City competing this weekend. In addition, this tournament brings great live music, food and beverages, games, and much more.

There are also number of activities before the main event begins. On May 31, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 60 area youngsters will be able to participate in a youth clinic where they’ll receive a variety of info, tips, techniques, a cool players package that includes a Fade Gear disc golf bag and a tournament stamped Innova golf disc. There’s even a special course to test their newly discovered skills.

Starting at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jeff Sheetz and his Flying Disc Dogs will take the field for an exciting show of canine creativity. Towser, a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix has been traveling and competing in disc dog events for several years along with Jeff and Jackie Sheetz. They’ve added a new sidekick, Killian, and both dogs have already qualified this year’s Disc Dog World Championships which will take place in Sept in TN.

The Kansas City Wide Open is billed as an extraordinary historical celebration of one of America’s most acclaimed disc golf tournaments! For those who have any interest in disc golf, one of the fastest growing sports on the planet, this would be an excellent time to find out what it’s all about.

Just a few of the exceptional disc golf pros who will be competing in the KCWO include the number one player in the world, Nate Doss, 12-time World Champion Ken Climo, and 2011 PDGA Rookie of the Year Ricky Wysocki.  There are also a long list of incredible female players who will be in the competition, including 3-time Women’s World Champion Valarie Jenkins, 2011 Women’s World Champion Paige Pierce and the 2011 PDGA Female Rookie of the Year, Catrina Allen.
