The Vibram Open, one of the most prestigious events of the year, is on now in Leicester, Massachusetts. This PDGA sanctioned A-tier tournament kicked off at noon on Thursday at the championship caliber Maple Hill Gold Course which is one of the most photographed on the PDGA tour. It will take place over the next several days, culminating on Sunday, August 19th.
The Vibram Open is the crowning event of the PDGA National Tour, and recognized as one of the most coveted titles in all of disc golf. To date, there has not been an MPO champion who has won twice at the VO, dating back to the 2004 MSDGC, according to the official tournament site, the Maple Hill Open.
Three-time World Champion Nate Doss was last year’s winner, while the current Women’s World Champion, Sarah Hokom was crowned champion in the Women’s Open division last year at the VO.
With the world’s top disc golf pros competing for over $50,000, after today’s first round, 2011 PDGA Rookie of the Year Ricky Wysocki is the leader, currently at 10-under par. Wysocki may come away with the victory this year considering how he’s played over recent months. Coming in at second in the 2012 PDGA Worlds in July, and winning a number of big events including last weekend’s Rochester Flying Disc Open and the previous weekend’s Brent Hambrick Memorial Open, he’s clearly becoming the player to beat at just 19 years old.
With the women’s payout at $8,300 to $10,000, there is a lot at stake in the Women’s Open division as well. After the first round, 2011 Women’s World Champion Paige Pierce is leading with a score of 2-over par, while Hokom and three-time Women’s World Champion Val Jenkins are tied at second with a score of 4-over par. Catrina Allen and Des Reading are not far behind, tied at fourth place currently.
This is sure to be one of the most dramatic events of the year. If you’re in the Leicester area, consider heading out to watch the final round on Sunday, with the pros teeing off at 10 a.m.; there will be lots of activities taking place over the entire weekend making it a perfect time to learn a little more about the great sport of disc golf.
