This weekend at the Canalway Center in Cleveland, Ohio, visitors to this Cleveland area metropark will be able to try their hand as disc golf with the Northeast Ohio Disc Golf Association and Parma’s HOLE 8 Disc Golf Shop.
All day members will be available to introduce people to the sport that’s consider one of the fastest growing in the U.S., as well as to teach them how to throw. They will set up a practice hole near CanalWay Center where you can “test your disc golf skills,” and will also answer any questions about equipment and local courses.
Chris Konzelman of Strongsville, Ohio is just one of the great players who will be there promoting the sport. He recently appeared on Cleveland’s Fox 8 News with “Kickin’ it with Kenny” to discuss this exciting event. Konzelman told me that “it’s been a long time coming to get disc golf into the Ohio metroparks system.” He can frequently be spotted at many of the region’s disc golf courses, competing in numerous tournaments throughout the year.
The Outdoor FUNdamentals program will also feature a variety of the many types of outdoor recreation that they hope will “become a FUNdamental part of your life.” Experts, vendors, exhibitors and clubs will be here with information about “where to go, what you can do when you get there and what you will need to have FUN!”
Fishing, geocaching, nature sketching and landscape photography are just a few of the other interesting activities that will be taking place.
If you only have time to try just one, consider taking a look at disc golf. It’s one of most affordable and easy-to-learn sports on the planet, as well as being one of the most fun. It that can be played by people of all ages and genders and does not discriminate. The majority of disc golf courses are free to play on, with thousands to be found in all corners of the world and more are popping up every day.
The first time K.C. Dermody played disc golf was in the spectacular Black Hills of South Dakota. She has since become addicted to promoting the sport, and enjoys playing in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She welcomes comments and suggestions, with the goal of promoting the sport of disc golf throughout the world. Find her on www.facebook.com/KCDermodyWriter or Twitter @kcdermody.
