This Weekend in Disc Golf: Madisonville Open in Kentucky July 6-8

This weekend, starting Friday, July 6 through Sunday, July 8 in Madisonville, Kentucky, the fifth annual Madisonville Open will be held at Madisonville City Park Disc Golf Course. This PDGA sanctioned A-tier event is presented by Blue Grass Disc Golf and will include some of disc golf’s top professionals who will compete on this challenging course that should really test their distance skills, requiring lots of long accurate drives.

The tournament begins on Friday with the recreational division players teeing off at 9 a.m. followed by the intermediate players at 10:20 a.m., advanced at 11:40 a.m. and the pros at 1:00 p.m. One round of 24-holes will be played each day, and on Friday night there will be a live concert and festival held downtown.

For those who may not have made lodging arrangements yet, the Madisonville tourism board is offering discounts at downtown motels for disc golfers. Visit their site here for a listing, and when making your reservation be sure to ask for the disc golf rate. Madisonville is in Hopkins County, about 125 miles southwest of Louisville and offers lots of scenic walking trails and lakes for boating, swimming and fishing.

Some of the most well-known players who will be competing in the Madisonville Open include Portland, Oregon’s Dave Feldberg, the 2008 World Champion, and recent winner of both the Minnesota Majestic and the Kansas City Open. Matthew Kern of Dale, Indiana was crowned champion at last weekend’s Evansville Open and will be competing alongside him in the men’s open division.

The 2011 PDGA Female Rookie of the Year, Catrina Allen of Phoenix, Arizona will compete in the women’s open division. Allen had a big win at the Beaver State Fling last month, and she’s on her way to another incredible year in 2012.

With lots of cash and prizes up for grabs, this should be an exciting to event for both spectators and players, and a great time to come out and watch some of the pros showcase their skills out on the course.
