Tips for Golfing in the Heat of the Algarve

The Algarve is a popular destination for golfing because of its fantastic climate, so make sure that you are prepared for playing a game in the warm weather.

The Algarve has a fantastic year round climate, with over three thousand hours of sunshine every year. Although it is on the Atlantic coast, the climate in this southern Portuguese region feels more like the Mediterranean with long hot summer days soaked in golden sunshine. In the summertime, the temperatures can be up to 30 degrees Celsius or more in the sunshine

When you are golfing in weather this hot, it is important to be prepared. The heat can be hard on your body and make it difficult to play the game, so here are some tips for keeping your cool when golfing in the warm sunshine of the Algarve:

  • Try to avoid the hottest part of the day, which is the early afternoon. You could book a tee time in the early morning or later towards the evening and the temperatures will likely be a few degrees cooler. In the summertime the days are long so you will have enough sunshine to play early in the morning or into the evening.
  • Make sure that you stretch before a game of golf, especially in hot weather. The heat will cause your body temperature to rise, which can make your joints more elastic and can make them more prone to injury. Perform your stretches and warm ups in an air conditioned building so that you don’t get too hot while doing them.
  • It is crucial to stay hydrated. Drink water before you go out and take a bottle of water with you on the course and sip from it every 20 minutes or so. Drinking Powerade or Gatorade or another sports drink can also help because these help the body replace electrolytes lost through sweat.
  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes in thin fabrics. Light colours will reflect sunlight away from you and keep you cooler. There are golf shirts you can buy in certain types of fabric which will wick sweat away from your body and keep you cool.
  • Keep your head protected from the sun by wearing a broad brimmed hat.
  • Also, do not forget to wear sunglasses as the UV rays from the sun can be very hard on your eyes.
  • Sunscreen is essential because nothing ruins a fun golfing holiday faster than suffering from painful sunburn. Not to mention, sunburns cause damage to your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Wear an SPF of 15 or higher and reapply it during the day if you are sweating a lot.
  • When you are golfing with your friends you can keep an eye on each other and let each other know if the other starts to look sunburnt.
  • Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, as it will dehydrate you. If you have a few beers in the clubhouse, be sure to up your intake of water as well to compensate.
  • If you feel yourself getting lightheaded or exhausted, take a break in the shade or inside the air conditioned golf clubhouse.
  • Bringing some small towels with you can be handy for wiping the sweat off your golf club grips before taking a swing.
  • Try to choose a golf course which is next to the sea, as the ocean breezes really help to cool you down!
