United States Disc Golf Championship Kicked Off Today in Rock Hill, South Carolina

The United States Disc Golf Championship kicked off today in Rock Hill, South Carolina. With qualifying required, many of the biggest names in disc golf are competing in this major event that will take place through Sunday, October 6. Winthrop University is hosting the tournament, and after round one on Wednesday afternoon, it’s Jussi Meresmaa of Tampere, Finland in a tie for first place with Nikko Locastro.

Fellow Finn, Seppo Paju had an impressive sixth place finish at the World Championships this summer, and hopes to have the best finish by a European in the USDGC this year. At this point he’s just six throws behind Mersmaa with a long way to go before even thinking of predicting who this year’s winner will be.

Josh Anthon of Rio Linda, California and Ricky Wysocki of Fort Mill, South Carolina are just a throw behind Locastro and Meresmaa. Wysocki had a second place finish at the Worlds, and many have predicted him to win it all at the 2012 USDGC. He’s been on fire all year with just a few of his victories including the Patapsco Picnic, the Brent Hambrick Memorial Open, and the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open.

Local and two-time World Champion Barry Schultz is among the top players and is just two away from the lead currently, while 2008 World Champion Dave Feldberg is sitting right there with him.

Other top disc golfers in the competition include 2010 USDGC Champion Will Schusterick of Nashville, Tennessee, 2009 World Champion Avery Jenkins, 2012 World Champion Paul McBeth, 2011 World Champion Nate Doss, 2010 World Champion Eric McCabe, World Distance Record Holder David Wiggins Jr.,  12-time World Champion Ken Climo and many others.

There will also be daily clinics taking place in which spectators can take part, including  Jussi Meresmaa & Avery Jenkins presenting” Deep in the Game,” Nikko Locastro on “Getting from Good to Great” and Dave Feldberg discussing Dave Feldberg “Working the Disc Down the Fairway.”
